About Us

Our Story

Founded in March 2024, the Sooke Community Radio Society is a registered non-profit dedicated to bringing a local public radio station to the Sooke and Juan de Fuca region. In just over a year, we've made significant strides to create a vibrant online station that serves our amazing community.

Our Growth

Since our inception, we've expanded our team to include 20 dedicated volunteer broadcasters and a larger core volunteer team, all working collaboratively to create a station that reflects the unique character of Sooke. Our volunteers bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm, ensuring a rich and varied programming schedule and many ways for people to get involved.

Meet Our Founders

  • Schuyler: A software developer, designer, and music producer, Schuyler is a former DJ at UCLA Radio and produced music out of Deep Blue in Vancouver before making Sooke his home. As our Technical Lead and President, he has been instrumental in assembling our mobile studio, setting up the station website, and helping teach community members how to create their own unique content.

  • Melissa: With experience in community and youth-led radio in Calgary, Ghana, and multiple Indigenous communities, Melissa is our Outreach Lead and Vice President, and she focuses on removing barriers and ensuring Sooke Radio represents our diverse community.

  • Sue: Sue helped start Montreal’s first community radio station and served as a CBC host, reporter, and producer for 20 years and has been instrumental in knowing the million things we need to do to get people on air. As our Policy Lead and Secretary, Sue guides licensing, content regulations, broadcaster education and policy creation.

Join Us

We are actively seeking community members interested in helping us grow our station. Whether you're interested in events, music tech, education, refining our station infrastructure, or hosting your own show, there's a place for you at Sooke Radio. Join us on Discord and introduce yourself!

Our Supporters

Our heartfelt thanks to the Sooke Municipal Council, whose belief in us and support through a Sooke Community Grant have been instrumental in getting our project off the ground.

Land Acknowledgement

As we share our stories and songs, we remember that the original storytellers and musicians in this land were the T’Sou-ke and Scia’new Nations, upon whose traditional territory we are guests. We are honoured to join a long line of voices that have risen in this place. Sooke Radio is committed to reflect the diverse chorus of our community. We commit to amplify and support the Nations’ work to protect and promote their sovereignty, identity, language, and cultural heritage. In this journey, we hold ourselves accountable to listen, learn, and grow as allies and community partners.

We invite you to be part of our journey as we continue to grow and serve the Sooke community.
